The 12 categories are inspired by the Social Foundations of the Doughnut Economics Model. The social foundations in their turn, are inspired by the social aims of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Everyone should have access to affordable, modern, and clean energy. Well-being is negatively affected by very low consumption of energy, use of dirty or polluting fuels, and excessive time spent collecting fuel to meet basic needs. Our planet needs cleaner energy alternatives, optimised mobility, and new regenerative solutions.

Food

We need new food systems where food production improves rather than degrades the environment and where people have access to sufficient, healthy and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life. We need regenerative thinking to be the backbone of our food systems.

Health

Within the social foundations, health refers to the interconnected dimensions of physical, mental, and social well-being in which disease and infirmity are absent.

Water

Access to safe and sufficient drinking water at an affordable cost in order to meet basic needs, including sanitation and hygiene, and safeguard health and levels of well-being.  Access to clean water is an essential precondition for good health, livelihoods, ecosystems and productive economies.

Political Voice

Respect for free speech and protection of democracy. The authority to choose their governing legislation. Cornerstones include freedom of assembly and speech, inclusiveness and equality, membership, consent, voting, right to life and minority rights.

The state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities regardless of gender, including economic participation and decision-making; and the state of valuing different behaviours, aspirations and needs equally, regardless of gender.

Education

Access to quality education is the foundation of improving people’s lives. The right to education includes access to free primary, secondary or basic education, improving the quality of education and avoiding discrimination at all levels of the education system.

Providing a foundation that promotes sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, through decent work, adequate income, and new systemic thinking. This includes new financial solutions and sustainability focused marketplaces.

Social Equity

Focused on the ideals of justice and fairness. It refers to the fair, just, and equitable distribution of public services and implementation of public and private policy. It is about the commitment to promote fairness, justice, and equity regardless of gender, sexuality, race, or religion. We need solutions focusing on creating a more equal society for all.

Housing

International human rights law recognises everyone’s right to an adequate standard of living, including adequate housing. It refers to equal and non-discriminatory access to adequate and affordable housing for the purpose of providing shelter, security, and safety. We need regenerative thinking in all housing solutions.
